Europe’s chemicals industry warns on threat from EU plans
BASF chief says policymakers must work more closely with industry on regulations of 12,000 substances

Europe’s chemicals industry has warned that EU efforts to tighten the regulation of more than 10,000 substances threaten its future just as it grapples with the pressures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) on Thursday took aim at two measures within a wide-ranging plan to clean up the environment through stricter rules on hazardous chemicals first set out by Brussels in October.

Although Europe’s chemical groups insist that they do not object to the ambitions of the plan, they warn that in its current form the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) threatens to wipe out €70bn of their revenues.

The proposals would target up to 12,000 substances used in everything from paints and detergents to electric-car batteries and semiconductors, forcing chemical companies to develop substitutes or reformulations — a process that can take years.

“CSS in its current form puts a big question mark over the future of chemicals in Europe,” Martin Brudermüller, president of Cefic and chief executive of BASF, told the Financial Times. “All additional costs coming in a region like Europe with very low growth rates is my major concern.”

The trade body said that as well as knocking 12 per cent off revenues, the planned changes would imperil 40,000 jobs on the continent.

Brudermüller urged European policymakers to work more closely with the industry on how to replace or reformulate substances. Funding for research would be needed, he added, while the EU’s ambitions needed to take into account the pressures the industry faces from climate change.

“It’s concerning that what we do here is additional cost and bureaucracy,” he said. “We have to talk about the means, prioritisation and timelines.”

The EU proposals come as large European chemicals groups are trying to revamp their portfolios on speciality chemicals such as battery materials, hydrogen, pharmaceuticals and personal care.

>>> What to look at today - 2nd of December 2021

Asian stocks were steady and U.S. equity futures climbed Thursday, shrugging off a weak Wall Street close amid questions about how much of a threat the omicron coronavirus strain really poses.
MSCI Inc.’s Asia-Pacific gauge fluctuated, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 contracts rose. The World Health Organization said vaccines will likely protect against severe cases of the variant and Australia’s chief medical officer said there’s no indication the variant is deadlier than other strains. European contracts declined.
In Hong Kong, an index of Chinese technology shares retreated amid Beijing’s plan to close a loophole used by tech firms to list abroad. Some suppliers to Apple Inc. slid on a report that the firm informed component suppliers of weakening demand for the iPhone 13 lineup.
American markets Wednesday were buffeted by the first confirmed U.S. case of omicron and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s reiteration that officials should consider a faster reduction of monetary stimulus amid high inflation.
But the mood was better in Asian hours: Treasuries fell, the dollarwas little changed and the yen declined and crude oil advanced. Meanwhile, Turkey’s lira weakened after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan abruptly replaced his finance minister. While the knee-jerk reaction of stock investors may “continue to be to take profits before the end of the year,” there is “plenty of liquidity available to drive stock prices higher as dip-buyers enter the market,” strategists led by Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, wrote in a note.
Fed Bank of Cleveland President Loretta Mester said she is “very open” to scaling back the Fed’s asset purchases at a faster pace so it can raise interest rates a couple of times next year if needed.
Crude oil’s climb came as traders await an OPEC+ meeting that will discuss output. Elsewhere, gold was little changed and Bitcoin slipped below $57,000.

WSJ : WeWork to Restate Results Due to Classification Error With Its SPAC Acquir

WeWork to Restate Results Due to Classification Error With Its SPAC Acquirer
Office-sharing company went public in October through a combination with BowX Acquisition Corp.

WeWork Inc. said in a securities filing that it would restate several quarters of its results, including its latest one, and that management has concluded there was a material weakness in its internal control.

The office-sharing company, which went public in October through a combination with BowX Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company, said Wednesday that the reinstatement relates to accounting classification of common shares issued as part of BowX’s initial public offering.

It classified a portion of those shares as permanent equity. Given that the shares had “certain redemption features not solely within the company’s control,” they should have been classified as temporary equity.

Given the classification error, “There was a material weakness in internal control over financial reporting relating to the interpretation and accounting for certain complex features of the public shares,” the company said in a securities filing.

As a result of the finding, the company plans to restate financial statements for 2020 and the first three quarters of 2021.

The company said in a statement Wednesday that the restatement plans aren’t related to its current operations.

“The ‘material weakness’ referenced in the filing today existed at BowX and does not carry over to WeWork,” the company said.

Shares of WeWork fell 5.2% in after-hours trading.
