The French state should reform its own bad habits when it comes to EDF
Macron appears particularly keen on wielding the energy group’s resources for political effect

Marcel Boiteux, the former boss of French nuclear power operator EDF, once famously damned the French state — at the time the company’s only shareholder — as “dishonest and unreliable”.

In fact, he was wrong. The French government is most reliable when it comes to exploiting its state-controlled companies for political expediency — even if they are partially privatised, as EDF has been since 2005.

President Emmanuel Macron, gearing up for expected re-election this year, appears particularly keen on wielding EDF’s resources for best political effect. Last month his government ordered the company to step up significantly the power it sells (at a loss) to rivals under a competition-boosting tariff scheme.

The order allows Macron to keep a promise that household energy prices would not rise by more than 4 per cent. No matter that EDF predicts this will cost €8bn, that it cuts the group’s credit rating a notch and puts yet more pressure on a debt-laden balance sheet. Or that EDF has to find €50bn over the next decade to refurbish its ageing reactors.

Now, adding insult to injury, EDF will have to stump up to buy a steam turbine business from General Electric of the US that it does not want. The deal, to be announced on Thursday, will secure jobs and the future of the gigantic Arabelle steam turbines used in French nuclear reactors. But it is clearly beyond the remit of a power generation utility to become a turbine maker.

Macron is expected to announce the rescue of the turbine unit himself, and it is not difficult to guess why. In 2014, as economy and industry minister in a Socialist government, Macron backed the politically controversial sale of Alstom’s turbine business to GE. The US group, in the throes of its own restructuring, now wants to sell and Macron needs to bury the politically inconvenient memory of his support for the sale. So EDF has to foot the bill.

To be fair, this is not the first time EDF has been called on to sort out political problems. The group was once required to buy dollars it did not need to help resolve a balance of payments problem for the state, according to Boiteux.

But the scale of the government’s recent demands has stoked a ferocious debate about whether EDF should ever have been floated. Perhaps it should have been left in the state’s complete control, sheltered from the volatility of markets, with a mission only to serve its public masters.

But what would that have achieved? Back in 2005, before its initial public offering and under full state ownership, EDF suffered from the same problems of debt, fleet renewal and competition that it faces now. It was less diversified and, according to one customer, less responsive. And without external shareholders to hold management to account, it was much less transparent.

Most importantly, the listing has helped to align the interests of private shareholders and EDF’s famously well-treated employees, who now own 1.3 per cent of the company.

One of the ironies of the recent outcry is that, back in 2005, the government had to promise not to raise household electricity prices above inflation to win public and union support for an IPO. Today, employee shareholders are outraged that EDF is being forced to help keep household energy prices low.

The debate has also drawn attention to the country’s flawed pricing regime, which leaves EDF exposed to the volatility of gas prices even though the group generates mainly nuclear and hydro power. Setting a regulatory regime that enables more visibility and stability on pricing would transform EDF’s credit rating and its ability to raise funds, insiders say.

So the problem is not with EDF’s listing. It is instead with the state’s schizophrenic approach to what it requires from the energy group. It wanted a listing to help drive reform of the quasi-civil servant culture. But the state still insists on treating EDF as it always has. That makes reform nigh-impossible.

When Macron unveils the turbine deal on Thursday, reports suggest he will also announce a long-mooted order for new power stations, and perhaps even a capital increase to fund them.

That will be welcome news for EDF. But a bolder and longer-term strategy would be to devise a better regulatory framework and then step back. If the state were to cut its stake from the current 84 per cent to 51 per cent, France would still control its strategic energy provider. Yet it would be harder to ignore the voices of other stakeholders who want a more stable and consistent partner in EDF.

9to5 : iOS 15.4 fixes bug that sends Siri recordings to Apple even after you opt

iOS 15.4 fixes bug that sends Siri recordings to Apple even after you opt out

Back in 2019, Apple introduced a new option that let users opt out of sharing their Siri recordings with Apple due to privacy concerns. While this option is still available in iOS 15, it seems that the option wasn’t working as expected. The company has now fixed that bug with iOS 15.4.

Apple said that a bug found in early versions of iOS 15 resulted in recordings of users’ conversations with Siri being shared with the company even when the user opted not to share them. To avoid further problems, Apple has silently disabled Siri recording sharing for “many” users with iOS 15.2.
Now, with the second beta of iOS 15.4, which was released to developers on Tuesday, Apple told ZDNet that the bug has been fixed. That’s why, once you update to iOS 15.4, the system asks again whether or not you want to opt in to sharing your Siri recordings.
According to Apple, all recordings that were improperly shared due to the bug were deleted from the company’s servers soon after the problem was identified.
With iOS 15.2, we turned off the Improve Siri & Dictation setting for many Siri users while we fixed a bug introduced with iOS 15. This bug inadvertently enabled the setting for a small portion of devices. Since identifying the bug, we stopped reviewing and are deleting audio received from all affected devices.
Apple uses recordings of people interacting with Siri to check if the assistant has been answering queries correctly in order to improve the feature. You can enable or disable the option to share Siri recordings with Apple at any time by going to Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements.
iOS 15.4 beta is now available to developers and public beta users. The official release is expected this spring.

WWD : Prada Linea Rossa Designs Sports Outfits for Riders Republic Game

Prada Linea Rossa Designs Sports Outfits for Riders Republic Game
Players will compete in sports ranging from biking and skiing to snowboarding, wing suiting and rocket wing suiting in the American National Parks.

MILAN — Taking brand experience to another level as it continues to explore new cultural languages, Prada has teamed with Ubisoft.
The Italian luxury group has joined forces with the leading video game company to integrate its Prada Linea Rossa collection into the outdoor sports playground of Riders Republic, available starting today.
“We are excited to partner with such a creative company like Ubisoft to offer our own interpretation of the gaming world,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group’s marketing director and head of corporate social responsibility. “Riders Republic is about outdoor sports and performance — the perfect match with the Linea Rossa collection and its DNA. Technology and innovation have always been a natural part of Prada, so we will continue to explore new scenarios whenever interesting opportunities for the brand arise to build original and authentic experiences.”

Riders Republic invites players to connect and compete in sports, including biking, skiing, snowboarding, wing suiting and rocket wing suiting, in the American National Parks.
Each player will be able to customize its character by choosing Linea Rossa outfits and sports gear — skis, snowboards and bikes — created especially for the game by Prada.
For Riders Republic, Prada revisited signature prints with a street-style attitude and with accentuated graphics for a strong visual impact.
The brightly colored Flame print in the night setting has a high-visibility luminescent effect.
For the Wild Stripes print, uneven lines recall the animal world. The pattern creates a contrasting and at the same time camouflage effect on a snowy landscape.
Prada’s historic Camouflage Rock print is made more graphic and geometric in the shapes to emphasize the dynamic effect of the look. The visual effect of this print and of the Wild Stripes pattern is enhanced by the signature red line placed on the back of the jacket in a macro version.

The Linea Rossa — not to be confused with the Luna Rossa line, named after Prada’s sailboat for the America’s Cup — is a a technical collection of high-performance apparel.
“We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to work with Prada to design original sports outfits and gear under their Linea Rossa collection and bring them to Riders Republic,” said Arnaud Ragot, game director at Ubisoft Annecy. “We thrive to offer our players a rich and diversified experience in the game and look forward to hearing what they have to say about this exciting new content and original in-game collection.”
The partnership provides a new platform for Prada Linea Rossa, as it translates its technical sportswear for Riders Republic, luxury and high-performance designs crafted using innovative technologies and textiles.
This is the first such project for Prada and it is in line with its increased investments in technology and customer-centric strategies and activations. During Prada’s Capital Markets Day in November, Bertelli said the company was scaling up its online channel and omni-channel customer approach, with big data leverage and focusing on purpose-driven communication through partnerships.

Starting Feb. 8, players will be able to explore the Riders Republic social hub with some areas bedecked with Prada Linea Rossa colors and a new themed experience.
Players will also be able to obtain some exclusive outfits by competing in the Shackdaddy Bandits weekly challenges by completing contracts from the in-game Prada sponsor program or by challenging their friends in a permanent event titled “Prada Beyond the Line,” one of many special in-game activations.

According to Lewis Ward, IDC’s research director of gaming, esports and VR/AR, the worldwide gaming industry saw revenues shoot up 119 percent in 2020 to $204.6 billion, with just 7.7 percent of that coming from video game consoles.
With the real world on pause due to COVID-19, fashion brands have been tapping into the booming world of video games. Some examples include Gucci and The North Face kicking off 2021 with a collaboration collection for Pokémon Go; Jordan Brand sneakers dropping in Fortnite; Louis Vuitton creating skins for League of Legends champions, and Christian Louboutin taking press and VIP guests to the digital Loubi World in the Zepeto social gaming app.
