Le document date du 16 août et a été enregistré en toute discrétion auprès des autorités néerlandaises, pays où Chanel a établi l’entité (Chanel International BV) qui contrôle le groupe de luxe et ses filiales. Comme à son habitude, Chanel n’a pas publié de communiqué sur le sujet. Le groupe refuse, en effet, de publier le moindre chiffre sur ses résultats. C’est bien dommage, car cette année, particulièrement, ce document de 90 pages nous apprend beaucoup de choses. Il révèle notamment que tous les chiffres du groupe sont en très nette baisse. Le chiffre d’affaires, d’abord, qui recule de 9% à 5,67 milliards de dollars, mais aussi le résultat opérationnel, qui baisse de 20%, à 1,278 milliard et le bénéfice net, qui recule, lui, de 35%, à 874 millions de dollars.
Comment expliquer cette avalanche de mauvais résultats financiers? Pour la direction, « les attaques terroristes en Europe du Nord ont réduit les flux touristiques et les achats d’articles de luxe, ce qui a entraîné une performance négative sur le première semestre. » Peut-être faut-il y voir aussi une conséquence de l’harmonisation des prix du groupe au niveau international, qui a fait flamber les prix en Europe? Pour cette année, le groupe prévoit cependant de redresser fortement la barre, grâce à ses « nouvelles collections saisonnières et à ses lancements, dont le nouveau sac et le parfum Gabrielle », du nom de la créatrice de la marque.
Heureusement, chez Chanel, tout n’est pas en recul. Les frères Wertheimer ne se sont pas oubliés. Alain, qui est installé à New-York et Gérard, qui dirige l’activité montres depuis Genève, en Suisse, possèdent 100% du capital du groupe. Ils se sont voté 3,4 milliards de dollars en dividendes au titre de 2016. Une somme énorme. Presque disproportionnée… C’est deux fois plus que les 1,6 milliard qu’ils s’étaient attribués l’an dernier. C’est presque deux tiers du chiffre d’affaires du groupe et c’est surtout quatre fois ce que l’entreprise a déclaré en bénéfice net ! La ponction a été si forte, nous apprend encore ce document de 92 pages, que la trésorerie de l’entreprise est tombée, pour la première fois depuis longtemps, sous le milliard de dollars!
Les deux frères, qui étaient évalués dans notre dernière édition des Fortunes professionnelles françaises, à 21 milliards d’euros, à la sixième place de notre palmarès, vont très certainement gagner quelques rangs à la faveur de ce dividende, en tout point exceptionnel. Cela fera d’eux, en tous cas, les détenteurs d’un étrange record digne du Guinness Book: celui du dividende le plus élevé reçu par un actionnaire d’une société européenne

- Asian equity markets opened mixed. Trading in HIBOR and the Hang Seng was suspended with a level 10 typhoon in Hong Kong. China markets remain under pressure, mostly related to commodity price (Dalian iron ore -5%) and China’s largest banks earnings reports starting tomorrow. At a rally President Trump commented on NAFTA, saying “Personally I dont think we can make a deal” and will probably end up terminating it at some point. He also alluded to allowing the government to shutdown if a deal if not reached on Mexico wall.
- NZD fell 0.4% to 0.7250 after New Zealand Treasury released its pre-election economic and fiscal update that cuts 2018 GDP to 3.5% from prior view of 3.7%, it also cut expected surpluses for the coming years. In Indonesia the central bank decision to cuts rates sent shares of property developer, banks and automotive stocks and sends the benchmark stock index to a near record high. PBOC drained funds through OMO for the 3rd consecutive session.
