Forbes : Is It Wise To Install A Computer In Your Head? (I have names...)

The ideas of fiction tend to drive real-world technology development. People read or experience stories, then sit and wonder, “So just how would that work, exactly?”

One such source of inspiration is the brain chip, a mainstay of cyberpunk fiction. Fictionally, the devices are implanted into the human skull or spine in order to grant improved access to computer systems, as well as often provide additional ways to learn or store memories.

Bryan Johnson, CEO of Kernel, is seeking to develop something along similar lines. His startup is working to develop a neuroprosthetic, which potentially could ease neurological issues such as problems related to strokes, concussions or dementia. Long term, the system could expand to include other functions, including improving cognition. Johnson is not the only one working in the field: In March, for instance, Elon Musk announced that his firm Neuralink is pursuing the goal of creating and improving brain-machine interfacing.


This kind of technology is very much still a work in progress, but it does raise some interesting questions. Is it really possible (or practical) to install a device or system inside the human brain with the goal of augmenting thought or communication? And, even assuming it can be done, is it wise?

1. It Won’t Happen Soon

I’m sure that this will happen at some point, but I think we underestimate the complexity here. The brain is the single most complex piece of self-organizing matter in the universe that we are aware of. There are 40,000 neurons in a cubic millimeter of tissue. 3. Gaining Public Confidence Is Key

Embedded technology in a complex human organ such as the brain for non-medical purposes is an idea that is still far from being accepted by the general public. Initial undertakings should focus on medical treatment for two purposes: continuous proof of concept and necessity. 4. Safety Is A Factor

Today, we use our smartphones to put our brains online, so the question isn’t if a better interface is feasible. 5. Devices Will Make Finding Information Simpler

We have this today in some form with our minicomputers (smartphones). IoT is also expanding our reach. When something like Kernal succeeds, interaction can be thought-driven, making information search and retrieval even more automated and intuitive. 6. It Can Be Done, But It Shouldn’t Be

We are definitely in a position, medically, to insert and manage chips inside of patients. However, there are negative effects and the potential violation of human rights to consider. 7. Focus Should Be On Orchestrated Cognition

Human brain implants aren’t the key to moving AI forward. The breakthrough will happen with orchestrated cognition -- multiple engines intelligently directed and acting in concert. With open-source AI technology, using the best cognitive engines to achieve results will not only solve immediate issues, but it will move AI to the next level. - Chad Steelberg, Veritone

8. Understand What You’re Changing Before You Change It

It’s feasible. Human body implants simulating bodily functions has been successful. Nevertheless, one must understand that cognitive faculties are very powerful. 9. If We Follow Best Practices, It's Not So Scary

Being involved in embedded computing my whole career, the idea of embedding a computer in a brain sounds no more far-fetched than embedding a computer in the braking system of an automobile. 10. Other Breakthroughs Suggest The Devices Are Possible

It’s hard to assess feasibility, but we are seeing major breakthroughs with technology in the medical field, including contact lenses that can monitor and potentially dispense insulin. It is theoretically possible to integrate with more and more body functions. CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the company considered acquiring Twitter before instead purchasing a majority stake in sports streaming site BAMTech.

The company was looking at different way to open up its distribution business and go directly to customers, Iger said at the Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit in Los Angeles on Tuesday. One of those ways was Twitter.

"We thought Twitter had global reach, a pretty interesting user interface, and a compelling way that we might be able to present and sell the content our company makes to the consumer," Iger said. "But we decided, ultimately, not to go in that direction. And we ended up — took us months to do it — buying a platform called BAMTech."

Bloomberg reported in September, citing people familiar with the matter, that Disney was looking into purchasing Twitter. However the company, which already owned one-third of BAMTech, said in August that it would increase its ownership to 75 percent.

BAMTech, a spinout of MLB Advanced Media, will power Disney's direct-to-consumer streaming services.

Regarding Twitter, Iger said:

"The social media component is interesting, but it's not about social media. It was about distribution."

BRUSSELS— Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.22% must return €250 million ($294 million) to Luxembourg in allegedly unpaid taxes, the European Union’s antitrust regulator ordered Wednesday.

The European Commission said Luxembourg had granted the e-commerce giant illegal state aid in the form of a 2003 sweetheart tax deal that illegally capped Amazon’s tax payments to Luxembourg, to the detriment of other rivals.

“We believe that Amazon did not receive any special treatment from Luxembourg and that we paid tax in full accordance with both Luxembourg and international tax law,” an Amazon spokesman said in response. Amazon added that it would consider an appeal. Both Amazon and Luxembourg can appeal the decision.

The decision is part of a broader effort by the EU to wring more money out of technology giants operating in Europe through various means.

The EU’s antitrust regulator has scrutinized thousands of tax deals between governments and large multinationals and has opened formal investigations into a cluster of them.

Last year, the EU ordered Ireland to recover roughly €13 billion in allegedly unpaid taxes from Apple Inc. that the regulator said the company was able to avoid paying through illegal tax benefits granted by Dublin. Ireland and Apple are appealing the decision.

Separately on Wednesday, the commission referred Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to implement that decision.

Moscow seeks information on operations and troop strength, according to officials with NATO countries

Russia has opened a new battlefront with NATO, according to Western military officials, by exploiting a point of vulnerability for almost all allied soldiers: their personal smartphones.

Troops, officers and government officials of North Atlantic Treaty Organization member countries said Russia has carried out a campaign to compromise soldiers’ smartphones. The aim, they say, is to gain operational information, gauge troop strength and intimidate soldiers.

The Russian Defense Ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment. Russian officials deny that Moscow stages such attacks.

U.S. and other Western officials said they have no doubt Russia is behind the campaign. They said its nature suggests state-level coordination, and added that the equipment used, such as sophisticated drones equipped with surveillance electronics, is beyond the reach of most civilians.

The campaign has targeted the contingent of 4,000 NATO troops deployed this year to Poland and the Baltic states to protect the alliance’s European border with Russia, as tensions with Moscow are on the rise, Western military officials said.

Targets are soldiers like U.S. Army Lt. Col. Christopher L’Heureux, who took over as commander of a NATO base in Poland in July. Soon after, he said he returned to his truck from shooting drills to find his personal iPhone had been hacked and reported lost. The hacker was attempting to breach a second layer of password protection through a Russian IP address, he said.

“It had a little Apple map, and in the center of the map was Moscow,” said Col. L’Heureux, stationed not far from a major Russian military base. “It said, ‘Somebody is trying to access your iPhone’.”

Col. L’Heureux, who prepares tactical troop positions to repel a potential Russian invasion, also found he was being physically tracked through his iPhone.

“They were geolocating me, whoever it was,” he said. “I was like, ‘What the heck is this?’”

Col. L’Heureux said at least six soldiers he commands have had phones or Facebook accounts hacked. He said he suspects the incidents were meant as a message that Russian intelligence forces were tracking him, could crack his passwords and wanted to intimidate his soldiers.

Western officials declined to describe technical security precautions in detail, but note that allied soldiers are trained on a variety of risks including cyberattacks.

Military cyberespionage experts said the drone flights and cellphone data collection suggest Russia is trying to monitor troop levels at NATO’s new bases to see if there are more forces present there than the alliance has publicly disclosed.

Some Western defense officials played down the military significance of the campaign, saying it has caused little if any damage and often involves public information.

Still, other Western officials said that in a crisis, compromised cellphones could be used to slow NATO’s response to Russian military action if, for example, the personal cellphone of a commander was used to send out fake instructions. While such communications via private device ought to be disregarded, it could sow confusion, they said.

And if a compromised phone were brought into a secure area such as a military command post, it could be used to collect sensitive information.

Near Estonia’s border with Russia, numerous soldiers in January complained of “strange things” happening to their phones on the Tapa military base shortly before French and British NATO soldiers were due to arrive, according to an officer on the base with knowledge of the incident.

A probe indicated Russia had used a portable telephone antenna to gain access to phones in the area, said the officer. The device apparently grabbed data sent from mobile phones and erased information on them.

“They were stripping everyone’s contacts,” the officer said.

In March, an Estonian conscript’s phone started playing hip-hop music he hadn’t downloaded while he was stationed on the Russian border, the soldier said. Contacts started disappearing from his phone around the same time, he said.

Since the Tapa incident in January, soldiers on the Estonian base remove SIM cards from their phones and are allowed to use the internet only at designated secure hot spots. Use of geolocation is forbidden.

Estonian conscripts said they are forced to jump into a lake during operations to ensure they are following a strict “no smartphones” policy. Some get around the practice by wrapping their phones in condoms.

The British contingent at the base said it has taken necessary measures to protect troops.

Information gleaned from personal communication, contact lists and social-networking sites has been used in encounters that indicate a goal of harassment or intimidation, according to Western officials.

In Latvia, a U.S. soldier standing in line for a sports event was approached by a person who casually dropped details of the soldier’s life, including information about family members, said a person close to NATO. A similar incident happened to a U.S. soldier on a train in Poland, that person said. Both encounters were believed to have been with Russian agents.

“Russia has always sought to target NATO servicemen for intelligence exploitation,” said Keir Giles, an associate fellow at Chatham House’s Russia and Eurasia Program. “But such a campaign of harassment and intimidation is unprecedented in recent times.”

Mr. Giles has given briefings on information warfare to some NATO countries’ troops ahead of their deployment to the Baltics and Poland, where they are within reach of Russian antennae and drones that can suck up data from mobile devices lacking advanced military encryption.

The Baltics—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania—have previously faced cyber assaults on their national internet networks and other connected systems, which they blamed on Russia.

“We are already in an unconventional cyberwar,” said Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė. “We know what neighborhood we live in.”

Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said a number of suspicious drones were spotted during his decade in office that ended last year.

U.S. military officials say the campaign remains more harassment than a security risk.

Col. L’Heureux, who served three tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, says the hacking of his smartphone was a wake-up call.

“I thought this would be easy…nobody’s shooting at me,” he said of his Poland posting. “But this is different.”

I will keep a close eye on these names still more on the short side. Asos won't be my main call as a short as I always thought will be a perfect match for amazon to get quickly to a critical size in fashion.

Amazon’s Private Label Lark & Ro Nears $10M in Sales
New research shows the online giant’s private label fashion push is starting to pay off.

Some of Amazon’s private label fashion offerings are growing at a rate other retailers would probably kill for.

The online giant’s AmazonBasics line offers everything from batteries to backpacks and has pulled in $250 million in sales year-to-date, accounting for 85 percent of its private label sales, but its women’s apparel line Lark & Ro has grown 90 percent over last year, hitting just under $10 million in sales so far, according to new research from One Click Retail.

Meanwhile, department stores are still posting sales declines or chalking up rebound growth in the low-single digits.

Apparel is also Amazon’s top-performing group within its private label business, with a handful of brands bringing in $24 million in sales over the last year. This is six times the sales for private label apparel the company tallied in the preceding-year period, One Click told WWD.

While apparel sales through Amazon Essentials have hit $3 million year-to-date, Lark & Ro has “dominated growth” in apparel for Amazon, One Click said.

The brand did $1 million in sales during Amazon’s Prime Day event, which accounts for 25 percent of Lark & Ro’s year-over-year growth. Between the second and third quarters, sales of the brand have grown 24 percent.

An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment on the performance of Lark & Ro, or any other brand, but the numbers were not disputed.

Lark & Ro quietly launched early last year alongside a handful of other private labels, and is an exclusive for Amazon’s Prime membership base offering a full range of women’s apparel.

But the apparent success of one line hasn’t created the same for others. Amazon is said to be shutting down its Paris Sunday label, although a line of products much smaller than that being offered under Lark & Ro is still available online.

Amazon earlier this year also decided to shut down Style Code Live, a streaming shopping show that rolled out around the same time as its first major private label brands.

The e-tailer’s fashion push has been slow and steady over the last couple of years, but the overall growth of its private label offering gels with research from Wells Fargo showing shoppers are increasingly heading to Amazon for apparel over traditional retailers.

Research from RBC Capital Markets earlier this year also found that apparel is Amazon’s most popular category.

This headway in fashion isn’t merely the result of a broad consumer shift to shopping online.

Amazon officially rolled out Amazon Fashion about five years ago, but this year has seen a concerted push of its private label business, the launch of a style program aimed at getting people dressed, hired a string of well-known models for its spring campaign, found a new president in fashion veteran Christine Beauchamp for the segment and began soliciting influencers for a new invite-only social platform.

And after years of reluctance to sell their wares on Amazon, companies like Nike, PVH Corp. and Levi’s, among others have recently started linking up with the online giant in an effort to boost sales.
