WWD : Fendi Drops Astrology-themed Beachwear Capsule With Activations in Spain

Fendi Drops Astrology-themed Beachwear Capsule With Activations in Spain
The collection inspired by archival pieces from the 1990s will be celebrated with two store openings and a beach resort takeover in Spain.

Fendi is ready to make a splash this summer, unveiling an astrology-themed beachwear capsule collection that comes with a dedicated campaign fronted by Irina Shayk and activations in the Mediterranean.

Inspired by the luxury brand’s archives and particularly by the spring 1990 and 1993 collections designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld, the capsule blends in Fendi’s contemporary codes and sportswear spin introduced by Kim Jones, artist director of couture and womenswear.

It comprises swimwear crafted from recycled Lycra, draped satin caftans and frocks as well as blouses bearing writings of zodiac signs, in English and Italian, and astrological prints originally sketched by Lagerfeld. A range of knitwear pieces — such as crocheted dresses with double-F insets, cashmere jumpers and body-hugging viscose pieces — as well as sun-drenched denim pieces and silk jerseys complete the offering.

The range also features the signature Peekaboo and Baguette bags in white leather or embroidered with astrological patterns and beach-ready woven pieces designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, artistic director of accessories and menswear, including a raffia shopper and straw bucket bag. Artistic director of jewelry Delfina Delettrez Fendi contributed with lucky charms to be sported as single earrings or pendant necklaces and textile bracelets matching the prints appearing on ready-to-wear items.

Fendi tapped Steven Meisel for a dedicated campaign evoking 1960s glam. It features Shayk sunbathing on a terrace and standing against a seaside landscape. The images are accompanied by a video.

Marking the launch of the capsule, the Roman luxury house controlled by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has planned several activations in Spain.

These include a 645-square-foot temporary boutique on Ibiza’s Marina Botafoch open through October. It features beach club-nodding striped décor, including walls decked in red and white and flooring in beige tones, while cherry and birch wood employed for furniture and displays evoke Fendi’s signature Pequin stripes.

In Andalusia, the luxury house is opening a permanent flagship in Puerto Banus, a seaside resort just outside Marbella. Covering 4,337 square feet over three stories, the unit features arched windows on the first floor nodding to Fendi’s headquarters at the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome.

A five-minute ride westward on the Costa del Sol, Fendi is taking over the Puente Romano Resort from June 13, customizing the Chirinquito area in Fendi prints and colors across furniture, cushions and textiles, including dedicated striped and astrology-themed table sets and ceramics, and the beach club where pillows, carpets and water sports equipment such as sail boats are branded.

A pop-up store selling key items from the Astrology collection rounds off the activations at the Puente Romano Resort.

WWD : Etam Will Open Its First U.S. Store in Miami

Etam Will Open Its First U.S. Store in Miami
The 3,000-square-foot location in Dadeland Mall comes 16 months after the French innerwear retailer entered America via Nordstrom.

Etam has chosen Miami for its first freestanding U.S. boutique, selecting a fast-growing city — and an opening date coinciding with peak swimwear season.

The 3,000-square-foot unit, now under construction, is slated to bow in mid-July at the Dadeland Mall, across from Sephora and Lululemon, and in the vicinity of Zara, Victoria’s Secret and Intimissimi.

The French innerwear giant — which entered America last April via shop-in-shops in 10 Nordstrom locations, Nordstrom’s e-commerce and Etam’s own online store — intends to open and operate three freestanding boutiques as “proof of concept” before expanding further Stateside, said Etam Lingerie’s chairman Laurent Milchior, the grandson of one of the founders of the 107-year-old firm.

It is actively scouting locations in Florida, Texas and New York, and aims to open two more locations before the end of the year.

“We want to bring our Frenchness, but we have to do it the American way,” Milchior said in an exclusive interview at Etam’s headquarters in Paris.

To wit: He is building a small team with retail, digital and marketing expertise in the U.S., led by general manager Kelly Wood, whose résumé includes stints at Gap, Third Love, Williams-Sonoma and Maiden Home.

“There’s a specific way of marketing things to the American consumer,” he stressed, drawing an analogy to the wine industry. Many American consumers order by grape variety, such as chardonnay, whereas French producers emphasize origin, with Bordeaux and Burgundy the two principal growing regions.

Milchior noted the lead time to open stores in the U.S. is considerably longer than in France, where only four to six weeks are required. What’s more, “store construction is much more expensive than it is in Europe, it’s double the price,” the executive marveled. “We only want to open in prime locations.”

However, he is convinced there is space for “alternative” innerwear brands in America, where the likes of Skims and Aerie have grabbed market share as leader Victoria’s Secret restructures and charts a new direction.

Known for its stretch lace, mix-and-match sets and affordable pricing in its core European market, Etam logged 70 percent sell-through in its first two weeks at Nordstrom locations, but has experienced some hiccups in fulfillment since it does not yet have warehouse facilities in the U.S.

Like other retailers, Etam is also coming up against inflation and recessionary pressures, causing most average consumers to put the brakes on discretionary spending.

To smooth its supply chain in America, it plans to forge synergies with Mexico, where Etam recently signed a joint venture with Diltex to distribute in department stores and freestanding units, of which two are up and running and five more are planned.

Yet Milchior said American customers recognize the strong price-quality ratio in Etam’s products, its know-how in terms of fit and comfort, and its colorful and elegant fashion offering, less in-your-face than some of its American competitors.

They also appreciate Etam’s corporate social responsibility credentials, with about 70 percent of its offering eco-conceived in organic or recycled fibers.

“For an educated American customer, this is very important,” Milchior said. “If you compare us to the other lingerie brands, we’re much more advanced on this topic…. We’re the greenest lingerie brand in the mass segment.”

Etam operates 860 stores in more than 55 countries, in addition to global e-commerce. The Etam Group also markets the Undiz, Livy, Ysé and Maison 123 brands.

At home, Etam boasts an 11 percent share of the French lingerie market.

To enhance its appeal in the U.S. market, Etam added extra sizes to appeal to the widest possible audience. Starting this fall, select bras will range from 30A to 42G, and select bottoms will range from XXS to 3XL.

In the medium-term, the brand plans to explore some product collaborations, while also drawing links to Etam’s French activities, which include a swimwear focused cruise fashion show, which unfurled in Saint-Tropez last month.

An annual blowout fashion show during Paris Fashion Week ranks as another of its boldest marketing statements.

The Miami store will be the seventh unit in the world to reflect a new “cozy yet modern” design concept, whose elements include pale wood, concrete, pink tones, neon lights, and brass details.

Etam enters the U.S. market with a wealth of retail expertise, omnichannel selling tools and high-tech razzmatazz, including connected fitting rooms.

Etam touts its French origins and style, and savoir-faire thanks to 60 bra specialists based in Lille, some boasting 40 years of experience. The brand was a pioneer in run-resistant lingerie.

Etam started out as a hosiery business, opening its first store in Berlin in 1916. The privately held firm is controlled by the Milchior, Tarica and Lindemann families.

WWD : Chanel Explores Tweed in New High Jewelry Collection

Chanel Explores Tweed in New High Jewelry Collection
The 63-piece collection, to be unveiled in London on Wednesday, blends gold and gem interpretations of the house’s signature fabric with other codes like the lion and camellias.

PARIS— After Gabrielle Chanel discovered tweed during her love affair with the Duke of Westminster, she turned this sturdy woven woolen material from Scotland into a byword for chic luxury.
Now Patrice Leguéreau, director of Chanel’s fine jewelry creation studio, has made it the epitome of precious with the “Tweed de Chanel” high jewelry collection to be unveiled in London on Wednesday.
“It is a theme, a subject that is anchored in Chanel and its DNA since the origins of the house and that I was already thinking about when I arrived 14 years ago,” he said. “I really want to regularly come back to it, because it’s strong and can enter in jewelry as it has in the house’s fashion codes.”

This is his second interpretation of the house’s signature material in gold and gemstones after a 45-piece first chapter launched in 2020 that included the “Tweed Couture” necklace, which was reproduced and added to the house’s patrimony in January.

Working with the fabric’s warp and weft motif also offered the possibility of having both creative and strikingly novel designs as well as a sense of classicism that would give the jewels a more timeless appeal, he added. “Imagine that pieces can be presented at different periods in time and can cohabit with other designs.”

For this 2023 chapter, which counts 63 designs, Leguéreau is weaving the tweed with another quintet of house codes into his creations, each associated with a distinctive color: the white ribbon, the comet on a dark blue sky, the pink camellia, the golden sun and the lion, whose vitality and regal stature are alluded to with the color red.

The biggest challenge in a gold-and-gems interpretation of tweed was finding “the philosophy of the fabric,” a material that can be supple and light but also sturdy and with a certain stature.

Central to this collection is the “Tweed Royal” necklace, a yellow-gold plastron necklace set with diamonds and 37 rubies, featuring an intricate weave design that helps it settle flush against the skin like the “armor of fabric” Gabrielle Chanel intended.

A detachable lion head motif can be worn as a brooch and the 10.17 pear-cut diamond that drips from the feline’s mane can be detached and worn as a ring. Finishing the necklace is a chain, in a nod to the one finishing Chanel garments to help them fall impeccably but also to give the lion a “more rock ’n’ roll” vibe, he said.

Another draw was that tweed can come in any color and its weave can have a number of textural rhythms — tight or loose — without losing its identity, making it “an inexhaustible wellspring,” for Leguéreau. The designs across the five themes where tweed is invoked go from tightly woven motifs to a nearly deconstructed interpretation.

Case in point, the “Tweed Etoilé” necklace where the hint of a tight weave at the side of the neck, complete with a 14.71-carat cushion cut yellow sapphires leads to five strands of white gold, yellow gold, lapis lazuli and onyx — tweed being woven or unwound is left to interpretation.

A throughline in the collection is Leguéreau’s intention of teasing “life, poetry, lightness and femininity…from a material that is very geometric and structured by nature.”

With the pink camellia idea, he wanted a lighter, more bubbly sensibility, giving it the shape of scatterings of pink stones figuring the petals of the camellia in the “Tweed Poudré” diamond, pink sapphire and rose gold necklace, or becoming a stately garden on the “Tweed Pétale” plastron, matching bracelet that can also be paired with earrings and a ring.

Elsewhere, a graphic ribbon looped through with diamonds and pearls in the “Tweed Ruban” designs often use pearls and different shapes of stones to evoke its namesake. “I played with tweed to work on variations that were original and novel,” he said.
Each theme is finished with an important ring, featuring its signature motif on under the stone, flush against the skin.

For each theme, a “Tweed Icône” cocktail ring brings a compact weave together with an important central stone. Hidden on the bridge is a filigree motif that nods to each theme, from a star to a stylized lion’s head.

In London, expect an exploration of the recent history of tweed as a jewelry subject but also regarding creative approaches around the material, including an immersive experience that will take visitors to the highlands of Scotland and the river Tweed.

“It’s a language that belongs to us, an absolute icon of the house of Chanel since the 1920s and one that has been stewarded by every creative director,” said president for watches and jewelry Frédéric Grangié, echoing Leguéreau’s belief that tweed is “unique” as a jewelry theme and “unique to Chanel.”

The “Tweed de Chanel” collection forms a pivotal triptych in Chanel’s high jewelry, alongside the No.5 and 1932 collections, paying homage to the brand’s iconic perfume and first high jewelry designs.

The presentation Wednesday will also be the first time that the French luxury house is putting on an event of this magnitude in London, a destination chosen primarily for its close connection to the collection’s theme, he continued.

In his opinion, there is no point to a “race to destinations” when it comes to putting high jewelry in front of the house’s clientele; he has felt a reinforcing of their expectations of “creation, know-how and ultimate quality [to be] the principal draw for them.”

Instead, the focus will continue to be offering an experience on par with the 18 Place Vendôme flagship in Paris, for example in Tokyo, with the October reopening of the Ginza jewelry and watches store.

“To make this kind of client travel, what is important is offering a comprehensive experience, one that can be simple — perhaps as simple as being barefoot in the grass outside La Pausa,” Gabrielle Chanel’s former country house currently being restored by the company, said Grangié.

>>> What to look at today - 5th of June 2023

Asian shares rose, extending a rally in global equities to a third day, as stronger economic data fueled optimism that central banks will avoid bringing on a recession while quelling inflation.  Stock benchmarks in Japan and Australia advanced more than 1% on Monday while South Korea’s Kospi rose about 0.5%. Shares in Hong Kong rose following the release of Caixin’s services purchasing managers’ index for China which showed improvement in May. Oil trimmed an earlier jump. Crude pared its gain to around 1% after surging as high as 4.6% on Saudi Arabia’s pledge to make an extra 1 million barrel-a-day reduction in July, taking its production to the lowest level for several years. Asian energy shares rose. Contracts for the S&P 500 edged lower in Asia after US payroll data helped take the underlying measure to the cusp of a bull market. An MSCI Inc. gauge of equities across developed and emerging markets is at the highest since May last year, despite increasing worries about an economic slowdown in China and the prospect of higher interest rates in the US.  Gains in the US on Friday were fueled by big tech, options positioning and bets for a Fed to hold rates unchanged this month, before a likely increase in July. The jobs report shaped wagers on the Fed, with signs of labor-market slackening in May despite a pickup in hiring. That bolstered the argument from Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other officials that they should take more time to assess incoming data and the evolving outlook before raising rates again. Two-year Treasury yields, which are more sensitive to imminent central bank moves, rose three basis points, adding to an increase of 16 basis points on Friday. Australia’s three-year yields jumped about 10 basis points. That came after the move in Treasuries and ahead of a central bank rates decision Tuesday. A gauge of dollar strength was fractionally higher, in part reflecting rising US yields. The euro, the pound and the Australian dollar moved lower while the yen weakened past 140 versus the greenback. Morgan Stanley sees the possibility of a 16% profit drop for the S&P 500 this year that would slam the brakes on a US equity rally. The prediction is one of the most bearish among those tracked by Bloomberg, and contrasts with bullish forecasts from the likes of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which anticipates mild growth.

WSJ : The Other Green-Energy Grid Crisis

The Other Green-Energy Grid Crisis
A lack of transformers has led to a housing shortage, frequent power outages, and dependence on China.

Empty dirt lots are scattered across American cities where developers once planned to build new homes. The problem isn’t that builders can’t find workers or obtain permits. They lack the electric transformers required to connect homes to the grid.

“We were so concerned about things like lumber and appliances, and those all help. But then all of a sudden it was this power transformer—you can’t get them,” a home builder in Greenville, S.C., told a Fox affiliate in March. “We have 106 town-home sites and so we’ve only been able to get the first six going.”

Transformers step up or step down electrical power that passes through transmission and distribution lines. According to the American Public Power Association, 1 in 5 housing projects has been delayed or canceled owing to shortages. The pandemic dearth of semiconductors, appliances and cars eased as demand ebbed and supply increased, but don’t expect this one to let up anytime soon.

Thank President Biden’s green-energy policies, which are increasing demand for transformers and the specialized electrical steel to manufacturer them while creating enormous market uncertainty. The lack of transformers is exacerbating the country’s housing shortage and causing longer and more-frequent power outages.

Broadly speaking, there are two categories of transformer. Large power transformers, which are located at substations and weigh hundreds of thousands of pounds, step up voltage from power generators and step it down for distribution. These are crucial for building out the transmission system to carry renewable energy from rural areas to population centers. Currently it takes utilities from 20 to 39 months to procure them.

Smaller distribution transformers step down voltage to levels that homes and businesses can safely use. These are necessary for connecting homes, businesses and electric-vehicle charging stations to the grid. Until recently, they were easy to obtain and replace but wait times now exceed 18 months.

Both types are made with electrical steel, also a key input in electric-vehicle motors. Yet the U.S. is dependent on a single domestic manufacturer for the electrical steel used in electric vehicles and transformers—Cleveland-Cliffs—and it can’t meet growing demand from the power industry and automakers seeking to electrify their fleets.

Domestic transformer manufacturers can and do import steel but have to pay a 25% tariff even as they struggle to compete with lower-cost foreign manufacturers. The U.S. is increasingly relying on imported transformers, including from China, which presents cybersecurity risks.

U.S. officials seized a Chinese-manufactured transformer in 2019 because they suspected it had back doors embedded in its hardware that could be exploited by hackers. For this reason, President Trump in May 2020 issued an executive order banning Chinese-made equipment from the bulk-power system and required the Energy Department to “identify, monitor and replace as appropriate” equipment that might present national-security risks. Mr. Biden reversed the order shortly after entering office, perhaps because he knew Chinese-manufactured transformers would be necessary to build the administration’s zero-carbon grid.

Demand for transformers is growing worldwide as low-income countries develop their power grids and wealthier ones go green. The U.S. now finds itself in the difficult position of having to compete with other countries for transformers and electrical steel at the same time as the Inflation Reduction Act subsidies supercharge demand.

But forget about building out the grid. We can’t even maintain the one we have. An Energy Department report last year warned that most large power transformers will soon need to be replaced. The average age is 40 years, and normal life expectancy under ideal conditions is 20 years. Aging transformers “cause higher failure risk,” the report notes.

Altogether this means the risk of blackouts is increasing—not only owing to shortages from unreliable renewables but also to failure of aging equipment. Distribution transformers are often damaged in natural disasters, and utilities say the lack of replacements delays power restoration after outages.

The Biden administration plans ensure that such problems can and will get worse. The Energy Department in January proposed efficiency standards for distribution transformers that would require an “amorphous steel” not readily available in the U.S. Climate activists lobbied for the new standards because they say more-efficient transformers will reduce power losses and the need for fossil-fuel generation.

That’s debatable. What isn’t is that the standards “would upend the market and manufacturing process” for electrical equipment, as automakers, utilities and home builders noted in a May 22 letter to Mr. Biden. As a result, “plans to expand domestic steel capacity and manufacturing of critical electrical equipment, such as transformers, are now in flux.”

Last week 47 senators—including 13 Democrats such as Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman and Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin—wrote to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm warning that her proposed rule “could put the administration’s electrification goals at risk by exacerbating an existing grid vulnerability” and threaten national security.

Mr. Biden’s climate policies are working at cross purposes, which might be comical if the consequences weren’t so grave.
