Scientists saw a surge in brain activity in dying patients that could finally help explain mysterious near-death experiences

  • Scientists observed a surge in brain activity in dying patients even after their hearts stopped.
  • The activity consisted of gamma waves, which are associated with lucid dreams and hallucinations.
  • Scientists say their observations may help explain bizarre reports of near-death experiences.

Scientists saw a surge in brain activity in dying patients. It's one of the very few times where researchers have had the opportunity to measure brain activity in humans immediately before and after "death."

The researchers say it could help explain the bizarre phenomenon that so many people report during a near-death experience, like leaving the body, floating above it, or seeing memories of their lives flash before their eyes.

Near-death experiences, "challenges our fundamental understanding of the dying brain," the researchers reported in the study, which was published last month. So, research like this is critical for building a clearer picture of the human experience near death.

How scientists measured human brain activity near death
The four patients in the recent study were comatose and removed from life support, with their families' permission. At this point, electroencephalogram sensors measured the patients' brain activity as they went into cardiac arrest.

The researchers found that two out of four of the dying patients experienced a swell of gamma waves — the brain activity associated with lucid dreams and hallucinations — even after their hearts had stopped, according to Smithsonian Magazine.

Scientists have long thought that the brain dies with the rest of the body, but the latest study suggests that people may retain a certain level of consciousness that lends to dream-like, out-of-body experiences as they die, Vice reported.

"The discovery of the marked and organized gamma activities in the dying brain suggests that [a near-death experience] is the product of the dying brain, which is activated at death," the lead author of the study, Jimo Borjigin, told Vice.

"As far as I am concerned, our study may be as good as it will ever get for finding neural signatures of near-death consciousness," Borjigin told Vice, adding that the "only thing better than this is to have the patients survive to tell the tale that correlates with the detected neural signatures."

Borjigin has observed this same type of surge in brain activity in previous studies on dying rats, but it has historically been very difficult to examine in humans.

That said, Borjigin aims to collect more data on dying human brains in the future to better understand the human death experience, per Vice.

New image from the James Webb Space Telescope shows thousands upon thousands of stars in a galaxy 17 million light years away

  • The James Webb Space Telescope snapped a new image of a galaxy 17 million light-years away.
  • Thousands upon thousands of stars are visible, many of which are concentrated in the galaxy's heart.
  • JWST is peering into the hearts of many galaxies to help scientists better understand star formation.
With the power of the James Webb Space Telescope, we can peer into the mysterious hearts of galaxies. And that's exactly what you're seeing here, in this new image from Webb of the galaxy NGC 5068.

NGC 5068 is located about 17 million light-years from Earth. For perspective, the Milky Way's neighborhood of galaxies called the Local Group, is 5 million light-years away. So, this galaxy is beyond what we might consider close.

Each individual dot of white light you can see is a star, per Mashable. NASA said there are thousands upon thousands of stars in this image. And many of them are hanging out at the galaxy's center, which you can see in the upper left as a bright bar of white light.
The bright bar in the upper left of the image is where the most stars are concentrated.

This region appears so bright because that's where most of the stars are concentrated. That's also where all the action is.

Most galaxies have an ultra-bright center due to warm dust that's heated by massive bursts of star formation, according to the Harvard Smithsonian. And it's this star formation that astronomers are interested in studying more with the help of JWST.

In fact, NGC 5068 is just one in a series of other galaxies Webb is observing for a project to help us better understand star formation. Webb has also taken images of the spiral galaxy IC 5332:
The James Webb Telescope is peering into the hearts of many galaxies to help astronomers gain a better understanding of star formation, especially in the turbulent environments of galactic cores.
ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, J. Lee and the PHANGS-JWST and PHANGS-HST Teams

And the heart of galaxy M74, aka the "Phantom Galaxy":
The James Webb Space Telescope sees objects in infrared wavelengths, which allows it to peer past obstructive light that would otherwise block our ability to see into the hearts of galaxies.
ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, J. Lee and the PHANGS-JWST Team./J. Schmidt

The James Webb Space Telescope has the advantage of seeing in the infrared.
Infrared wavelengths are too long for the human eye to detect. But they're especially important for studying in space because they allow JWST to peer past obstructive visual light that would otherwise block our ability to see into the hearts of galaxies and their bustling environments of star formation.

"By observing the formation of stars in nearby galaxies, astronomers hope to kick-start major scientific advances with some of the first available data from Webb," NASA said.

Fwd:Business Of Fashion : Will Apple’s New Headset Be the Metaverse’s iPhone Moment?

Will Apple’s New Headset Be the Metaverse’s iPhone Moment?

Apple’s expected announcement of its mixed-reality headset on June 5 will undoubtedly shape expectations about the metaverse. Many in the fashion industry will be keeping close watch. That, plus what else to watch for in the coming week.
On June 5, Apple will introduce what might become its most important product in more than a decade: a mixed-reality headset that could, in theory, lay the groundwork for a successor to the smartphone — at least that’s if all the rumours swirling prove true. What began as whispers about a product announcement has solidified into confident reports from Apple watchers that the reveal, after years of anticipation and delays, will come at the company’s annual developer conference next week.
The arrival of the new device would undoubtedly shape expectations about the so-called metaverse, a murky term generally referring to a 3D extension of the internet that encompasses virtual and augmented reality, which overlays a digital element on the physical world. Fashion has been standing by to see if this speculative vision of the future materialises to become the primary way consumers go online, rather than remaining the clunky, niche experience VR and AR provide today. It could impact fashion’s fortunes by transforming how consumers shop as much as mobile devices before it and opening up new markets for digital goods, like AR clothing that can exist beyond an app or social media.
Proponents of a mixed-reality technology believe smart glasses or some form of easy-to-wear face computer will be key to taking it mainstream. Apple’s track record with consumer blockbusters such as the iPod and iPhone suggests it could be the company to build it. It faces high hurdles, however. Technological leaps are still needed to make the components for such a device fit into something as small as a pair of glasses. Apple’s headset is said to resemble something more like a pair of ski goggles, powered by a separate battery pack a user could carry in their pocket, than a pair of lightweight frames. It’s also expected to cost about $3,000 — multiple times the price tag of devices like the iPod and iPhone at launch. Investors so far seem unimpressed as analysts predict only modest sales.
If the rumours are just that and Apple delays again, that would say plenty in itself about the challenges of making this vision a reality. Companies have been working for years to produce a commercial hit in the category, with tech giants such as Microsoft (HoloLens) and Google (Glass) as well as start-ups such as Magic Leap all trying and failing. Meta’s Oculus may be the best attempt so far and is still far from being what the iPhone was to smartphones — the version that convinced everyone they need one. Humane, founded by a pair of former Apple employees, aims to dispense with a screen of any sort but still has yet to debut a viable product.
“As we observe the state of [extended reality] in 2023, it’s fair to say the technology has proved harder than many of the best-informed and most financially endowed companies expected,” wrote Matthew Ball, author of “The Metaverse: And How It Will Revolutionize Everything,” in a January blog post.
Hardware is only part of the equation. Smartphones combined functions that were already part of daily lives — making calls, taking photos, listening to music and accessing the internet — into a single, convenient package while adding other apps that have become indispensable, like maps. It’s unclear how a headset would replicate the formula. Apple will reportedly make many of its popular apps available for its headset while developing others for fitness, gaming and entertainment, but consumers still need to find the whole package compelling enough to opt for putting a device on their heads instead of just picking up a phone.
How they respond to Apple’s rumoured headset is likely to reveal a great deal about the potential for mixed reality in the near future, or at least until the technology catches up with the ambitions for it. Fashion businesses will be waiting to see if it’s the next iPhone or the next Apple Watch — a fine moneymaker for Apple, but far from transformative.

Netflix rival Viaplay ousts chief and issues profit warning
Shares in European streamer known for Nordic drama plunge by almost 60%

European streaming service Viaplay has ousted its chief executive and warned on profits, sending shares in the group known for Nordic drama down by more than 50 per cent.

In a press release issued in the early hours of Monday, Viaplay said Anders Jensen would be replaced as chief executive by Jorgen Madsen Lindemann, former head of MTG, the ex-parent company of Viaplay.

The Swedish group, which saw itself as a European rival to Netflix, said it now expected to report an operating loss of SKr400mn-SKr700mn ($37mn-$65mn) and withdrew its long-term guidance for sales, subscriber and profit growth.

It blamed factors including lower demand for streaming subscriptions, an “accelerated deterioration” in Nordic TV and radio advertising, and a slowing of its cost-cutting programme.

Shares in the company plunged by almost 60 per cent in early trading on Monday
