A potential blockbuster medicine developed by Shire has been approved in the United States, bolstering a Japanese rival’s reasoning for taking over the London-listed drugs maker.
Shire said that the US Food and Drug Administration had given the green light to a treatment to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema in patients aged 12 and over.
The rare diseases and neuroscience specialist recommended a £46 billion takeover offer from Takeda in May. The deal, which remains subject to shareholder approval, would be one of the biggest in the pharmaceuticals industry and part of the appeal for the Japanese suitor has been Shire’s emerging late-stage pipeline of medicines and its big business in the US.
