A projected Democratic sweep of both houses of Congress rippled across global markets, sending stocks and the dollar lower while boosting Treasuries, on speculation the result will put the brakes on President Donald Trump’s agenda. Futures for the S&P 500 Index dropped 0.7%, after falling as much as 1.4%, while those for the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 declined 0.8%. The dollar weakened against all its Group-of-10 peers, while the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note declined two basis points to 4.96%. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index of regional equities slipped 1% and Bitcoin lost 0.7%. Investors see a Democratic wave as a potential setback for stocks and the dollar given the prospect of tighter regulatory scrutiny, particularly of high-growth technology and artificial intelligence companies. Treasuries, meanwhile, stand to benefit if political gridlock limits further tax cuts and government spending, easing concerns about federal borrowing. The Democrats will win control of the house and the senate, Decision Desk HQ reported. James Talarico of Texas was projected to defeat Republican Ken Paxton in the state’s hotly contested Senate race, becoming the first Democrat to win a statewide election there in roughly three decades. Democratic candidate Annie Andrews was projected to pull off a stunning victory in deep red South Carolina. Trump said he would accept the midterm election results, the New York Times reported. Still, Wednesday’s moves in US stocks and Treasuries represented just small reversals to the year-to-date trend. The S&P 500 is up about 10% for 2026, while Treasury 10-year yields have increased more than half a percentage point. Treasury yields fell across the curve as the election results emerged, led by those on five-year notes which dropped as much as nine basis points to 4.68%. A Democratic takeover of the House would reduce the likelihood of further deficit-expanding legislation under the Trump administration. Bond investors have been uneasy about the US’s fiscal trajectory with the nation’s debt load at around $40 trillion, and gridlock may reduce the risk of additional spending or tax cuts that would require more Treasury issuance. In currency markets, the Swiss franc was the biggest gainer versus the dollar, rising 0.5%, while the yen climbed 0.4% and the euro strengthened 0.3%. In Asian stocks, South Korea’s Kospi Index dropped 0.6% as the US midterm election results damped sentiment toward global equities. The gauge had earlier been up as much as 3.2% after technology shares rallied on Wall Street on Tuesday. Bitcoin slipped as much as 2.8% on concern a Democratic sweep could stall industry-backed legislation and bring tougher scrutiny of digital-asset firms. A political stalemate may also limit further fiscal stimulus and weigh on speculative assets.
