Situational Awareness back in the market — $400M private investment days afte

A quick note on a situation worth watching.

Bloomberg reported yesterday that Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness completed a $400M investment in a privately held company on Tuesday — just days after the fund narrowly avoided collapse under a wave of margin calls. This follows a $100M investment in the same (undisclosed) company last month. For context, the fund sold essentially its entire public book to Citadel last week to repay lenders, with AUM falling from ~$45B at the start of July to ~$10B today. It retained its private holdings, dominated by a stake in Anthropic valued at ~$5B.

The recipient of the $500M has not been disclosed. The known private portfolio narrows the field to three names: Anthropic, MatX, and Fluidstack.

My read: Fluidstack is the most coherent candidate. The AI data-center builder ("neocloud") has been in talks since April to raise $1B at an $18B valuation — a round Situational Awareness was expected to co-lead with Jane Street, Morgan Stanley advising — and that round has still not been confirmed closed. A $100M cheque followed by $400M fits the profile of a staged commitment into that raise. Fluidstack closed an $830M Series A at $7.5B in July (led by Situational Awareness), holds a $50B US data-center build-out agreement with Anthropic, and has ~$6.7B in contracted hosting revenue with TeraWulf backstopped by Google.

MatX, the LLM-focused chip designer founded by ex-Google TPU engineers, looks less likely: its $500M Series B (co-led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness) closed in February, and a further $500M four months later would nearly double total capital raised. Anthropic seems improbable for a cheque of this size given its ~$965B valuation.

To be clear, the target has not been confirmed — this is my deduction from the available facts, not reported information. The strategic message, however, is unambiguous: even after a forced liquidation of its public book, the fund is doubling down on private AI infrastructure.

Happy to discuss.
