Pompeo arrives in Baghdad after cancelling Merkel meeting
Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, arrived in Baghdad on Tuesday for a previously unscheduled trip that came after he abruptly cancelled a meeting in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The state department did not explain why Mr Pompeo flew to Iraq on short notice, but he was expected to discuss Iran as tensions mounted in the Middle East. The US this week deployed an aircraft carrier and bombers to the region.
