The humanitarian costs of the coronavirus outbreak have continued to mount, with almost 78,000 people infected in China alone, where the outbreak originated. The number of people who have been confirmed to have died as a result of the virus has now surpassed 2,300.
It has hit a growing list of companies by sapping consumer demand in key regions and disrupting supply chains. Chinese stocks, the travel sector and energy funds have also been hit.
The data for this map comes from a dashboard maintained by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science Engineering, which has combined data from the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It also incorporates data from the Chinese medical community website DXY, which aggregates live situation reports from the Chinese National Health Commission and local CCDC
New coronavirus cases have fallen markedly recently to around 600 each day. The total number of recovered cases has now reached 21,223.
