Asian equities slid Wednesday as concerns about the repercussions of Italy’s political turmoil and the renewal of trade tensions between the U.S. and China gripped financial markets. The yen edged higher, while Treasury yields recovered after plunging Tuesday. Financial shares led the MSCI Asia Pacific Index lower as the Italian impasse reminded investors of the European debt crisis and its knock-on effects across global banking. The regional gauge is heading for its lowest close since February as shares tumbled from Tokyo to Sydney. Ten-year Treasuries consolidated after yields sank the most since the U.K. voted to exit the European Union in 2016. The dollar steadied and the euro traded around its lowest since July 2017. Gauges of volatility soared.
