Asian stocks put in a mixed performance Friday, limping toward a modest weekly advance at the tail end what’s been the worst year since 2011. The yen led gains against the dollar as traders looked for havens from a remarkable bout of volatility.
Japanese shares declined, while stocks in China, Hong Kong and Korea saw modest gains. Futures on the S&P 500 Index saw another roller-coaster session, swinging between gains and losses. The American benchmark erased a drop of almost 3 percent in an afternoon recovery Thursday -- the biggest upward reversal since 2010. It’s been a week of superlatives for stock traders, after U.S. shares climbed the most in more than nine years on Wednesday. Elsewhere, 10-year Treasury yields held under 2.8 percent, Japanese yields dipped below zero and oil traded around $46 in New York. Gold rose.
