Japan’s stocks were mixed, while Australia’s market advanced in a muted session with many major markets shut for holidays. The dollar cemented its recent advance and oil extended an advance above $68 a barrel.
Futures on the FTSE 100 edged higher with S&P 500 Index contracts. Banks led gains in Australia after recent declines, while Japan’s Topix index inched lower. Markets are closed in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and much of Europe, though not in the U.K. The greenback preserved gains ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting and the U.S. employment data due Friday.
