USDA and APHIS confirm new avian flu cases confirmed in 4 states, 1 province
- The virus was recently confirmed in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Utah

The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in North America has intensified, as new confirmed cases have been reported in the United States and Canada.

Five new flock infections have been reported in the United States alone, while one has been reported in Canada.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) both reported that the presence of H5N1 HPAI has been confirmed in a commercial turkey flock in Calhoun County, but neither agency has yet reported how many birds were involved.

The situation was confirmed on October 2, and represents the first time HPAI has appeared in a commercial flock in Iowa since March 17.

IDALS reported that this is the eighth time in 2025 that HPAI has been found in Iowa, with five of those instances involving commercial operations and the other three involving backyard flocks. The other four commercial poultry cases occurred in Buena Vista (2) Sac and O’Brien counties.
