A Financial Times report noted that turnover in Afren shares was close to 10 times the daily average. The article also mentioned pre-drill estimates suggesting that the Paipai-1 well could contain 115m barrels of oil. Afren holds a 20% stake in PaiPai, according to the newspaper.
The Financial Times item also mentioned talk that Afren may have attracted predatory interest, naming Exxon Mobil as one potential buyer for the Africa-focused company.
A market report in The Times attributed little credibility to the takeover rumours, mentioning Royal Dutch Shell as another rumoured potential bidder for Afren.
A Daily Telegraph market report cited traders for speculation that two unidentified companies are mulling an offer for Afren. Afren refused to comment about the rumour, the item said.
