EU border chaos (EES) — long the vendors, fade the panic on travel

Quick idea map on the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), the biometric border regime that fully went live in April and is now generating 1–3 hour queues at Schengen entry points all summer. WSJ and the trade press are running near-daily horror stories; airline lobbies asked Brussels for a summer pause and were refused.

The clean long: border-tech vendors. This is multi-year, government-funded spend that just became politically untouchable — the fix for the queues is more kiosks, more e-gates, more integration work, not less. Plus ETIAS (the EU's travel-authorization layer) stacks on top in 2027.
  • Secunet (YSN.DE) — purest listed play; German/Austrian EES contracts, small cap, thin float.
  • Thales (HO.PA) — EES kiosks/biometrics across multiple member states incl. Spain; small vs. group revenue but steady.
  • Amadeus (AMS.MC) — owns Vision-Box (e-gates); optionality on airport capex cycle, core GDS business is the real driver.
  • Watch-only: IDEMIA and SITA are major players but private; Indra (IDR.MC), Leonardo (LDO.MI), RTX (Collins kiosks) have peripheral exposure.

The short case is weaker than the headlines. AF-KLM (Schiphol chokepoint), IAG, Ryanair, easyJet and the US transatlantic carriers (DAL/UAL/AAL) eat the operational cost — misconnects, rebookings, comp — but summer transatlantic demand hasn't cracked, and this is a nuisance line item, not a demand shock. Same for airport operators (AENA, ADP, Fraport): the real bleed is retail/duty-free spend per pax when passengers are told "don't shop, go straight to border control." Worth monitoring in H2 prints, not worth pressing yet.
Second-order: Getlink (GET.PA) on Eurostar/LeShuttle friction; DFDS/ICG on ferry borders. Small.
Catalysts: September (rumored full-enforcement date after the phased rollout), H2 airline/airport earnings for any spend-per-pax or misconnect commentary, ETIAS timeline confirmations, and any new national kiosk tenders (Secunet/Thales order flow).
