Altice acquisition of Media Capital raises antitrust concerns in Portugal - report (translated)
31 JAN 2018
Altice's [AMS ATCT] acquisition of Portuguese firm Media Capital [ELI MCP] has raised concerns with Portugal's AdC Competition Authority, reported Jornal de Negocios. The business paper said it has seen the initial AdC report on the potential acquisition of television channel TVI, owned by Media Capital, by Meo, owned in turn by Altice.
Altice's plan to acquire Media Capital, from Spanish media group Prisa for EUR 440m, could pose serious hurdles to effective national market competition, the AdC said. Non-provision of the TVI channel by Meo to rivals and a hike in its price are some of the key regulatory concerns over the Altice plan to buy Media Capital, the item said.
Altice's Media Capital purchase is already opposed by Portugal's Anacom communication regulator and the ERC media-sector regulator has failed to reach a consensus on the deal, according to the report.
